Compass QMS were recently engaged to deliver an intensive, multi-week auditing programme for a valued client. The objective? To evaluate their quality management processes for compliance with ISO 17025 and The FSR Code of Practice, the fitness for purpose of their documented procedures and to substantially contribute to completing the internal audit schedule prior to their UKAS assessment.
Following thorough preparation, we immersed ourselves within the client’s documentation and, working closely with internal staff, performed structured audits across all aspects of their quality management system. This facilitated the provision of comprehensive audit reports, identifying improvements, non-conformance and consideration of risk.
Looking back at one of our previous articles that highlighted a number of auditing pitfalls, it was very reassuring to see that our engagement validated how all of these potential issues could be overcome by using our external auditing services.
- Having dedicated external auditing resources addressed the issue of an organisation scheduling staff to conduct audits by removing them from operational and/or commercial activities.
- Our well-defined audit plans enabled us to remain detached and focused on specific audit requirements, thereby avoiding ‘scope creep’.
- As ‘outsiders’ we were able to retain total independence. Remaining impartial, balanced and neutral throughout the programme enabled us to robustly challenge defined processes.
- Detailed conversations facilitated formal scheduling of the most appropriate auditee. Furthermore, transparent communications during the auditing process developed trusted relationships to ensure the most effective outcome for the client.
- Importantly, we evidenced our competence and experience in internal auditing, which supplied integrity to the engagement and assured the delivery of detailed, clear and comprehensive reports.
- As experienced auditors, we were able to provide our client with clear visibility into their compliance gaps and potential improvements, whilst identifying emerging risks.
We were also able to offer additional value through our industry knowledge and experience, in providing clarity and guidance to resolve identified findings. Initial feedback from the client was that the engagement was an immense success and has been invaluable in supporting their ongoing accreditation journey.
